Highest of high tides
The changing of the tides isn’t anything special for anyone living here in Maryland, or for anyone who is familiar with the water. High tide, low tide…in and out…repeat.
So, what makes today so special? The Perigean Spring Tides happen today. Sounds fancy, yes…but the Perigean Spring Tides are the highest possible tides and they occur when the New Moon or Full Moon takes place within 24 hours of the moment the Moon is nearest to Earth (perigree) in its monthly orbit at 11pm EDT.
The name may sound seasonally-influenced but it’s actually named for the German word springen, “to leap up.”
Speaking of celestial bodies, if you happen to be in eastern Asia, the Pacific Ocean region or Hawaii, you’ll be able to see the Solar Eclipse (total eclipse of the sun) today and tomorrow. Be sure not to look directly at the sun! It’s not good for the eyes.
