More Than Meets The Eye

By Chris

With all the controversy surrounding the opening of the Star Trek film and viewer backlash against the digital IMAX experience that is available mostly at commercial multiplexes,  the Maryland Science Center reminds its fans that our IMAX Theater is not the same as these mall products.  In general the IMAX experience in retail settings is a much smaller screen with less vibrant sound and picture quality that cannot compare to the all film, 39 speaker surround sound and five story screen at the Maryland Science Center (for more on the controversy click  here).  The IMAX Theater at the Science Center remains the only true IMAX experience in Maryland that offers the giant screen, clean, crisp imagery, and total immersion.   While some fans have called for IMAX to distinguish between the original large format IMAX Theaters and the less satisfying digital IMAX at multiplexes–it seems unlikley that this will happen.  But we make the distinction and know that true IMAX fans will accept no imitation.  Currently on our screen is Night At The Museum-Battle of the Smithsonian and coming soon are two highly anticipated films which practically scream for the giant screen experience: Transformers-Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half Blood PrinceTransformers opens June 24th and tickets are on sale now.  Harry Potter opens July 29th–two weeks after it opens in conventional 35mm theaters but with an opening sequence filmed in the IMAX format the wait will be worth it.  Don’t miss these films in IMAX–the real IMAX–only at the Maryland Science Center.
